It is thought that those involved in veganism and vegetarianism have a higher rate of developing anemia and other iron-deficiency conditions compared to those who practice a more conventional meat-eating diet. Well, that is to be expected if they are not taking extra care to adequately nourish their bodies with the foods that they are eating.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 comes exclusively from animal sources. It is essential to combat iron-deficiency. Without enough B12, it will be difficult for your body to absorb and utilize your iron intake. Since vegans take animal sources out of their diet, it is often an issue for them. More often than not, the foods they eat are usually low in iron.
Luckily, there are other options available that you can do to get iron, such as eating tofu, broccoli, and green leafy vegetables, or taking B12-fortified food supplements and vitamins. Make sure you do your best to source your vitamins from foods, as those are the easiest to absorb. If you are going to eat iron-rich foods, eat alongside them, meals that are rich in vitamin C to aid in absorption. That way, you know precisely what your body gets.
Omega 3 Fatty Acids
Another nutrient that is found in meat products is omega-3 fatty acids. If you are not getting enough of this nutrient, your Cognitive functioning can be affected. There are several omega-3 fatty acid supplements for vegans out there to avoid this deficiency.

It isn’t enough to buy all the self-proclaimed vegan foods and call it a day. Having an in-depth understanding of what your body needs and the way it works will help you ensure you are not going to be deficient in anything essential for your body to thrive.
Never delay consulting your doctor if in any case, you feel you’re already deficient in one of those nutrients mentioned above. They’ll likely do some tests to confirm and provide you with the needed supplements to help get your nutrient levels back to normal the earliest time possible.
